Emergency warming shelters... |
|
Our son Ryan and I were able to serve at the warming shelter that our church opens in the winter. The homeless are able to stay in the gym and are given clothing, food, blankets, etc...
When we arrived in the parking lot ready to work, we could hear distant talking and most of them were laying on blankets against the buildings. Cars would pull in to drop off clothes and food and we would take them to the storage rooms.
A quiet voice that seemed to come from the pavement said, "Can I use your phone?" We saw a lady who had been sleeping there. I looked around at all that was going on to see if we had time to stop what we're doing - which we didn't. People were coming out of their cars with clothes and food, not knowing where to drop it off. I felt like I should say yes, so we stopped to help her. We learned that she wanted to go to a drug recovery program. In between unloading cars, Ryan and I spent some time trying to get her a Medicaid car ride and find a recovery place that accepts walk-ins. After the plans are set, I asked her. "Do you really want to go to a recovery program or do you just need a place to stay? No judgement either way, I'm just curious." She looked at me dead in the eyes and said, "I want to be a better person." I realized how serious she was, so I shared with her about my experience of using drugs and alcohol in high school and college to self-medicate from depression and why I invited Jesus into my heart. I explained how it felt to be completely forgiven and brand new. I asked her if she wanted that and she very quickly said, "Yes." She had so much certainty in her eyes. We prayed together and she invited Jesus in. I asked her how she felt and she said, "So much better." We shared with her about how to hear God's voice and about the Bible. She didn't have a Bible so we found one to give her. We told her about the Old Testament and New Testament, what a chapter and verse are and where to start reading.
I asked if she'd been involved in any type of spiritual situations. She told us that there's a witch who read her future with tarot cards, sold her meth, and weed. She suspected that the witch had done something to the drugs and wanted to kill her. She gave up her drugs and we prayed for her that the witch wouldn't be able to find her and hurt her anymore.
Most of the time, introducing someone to Jesus doesn't start with us asking, "Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and savior Jesus Christ?" Sometimes it starts with someone saying, "Can I use your phone?" |
